Palin’s Timing and Moves Textbook Perfection

Posted on November 27, 2009

Sarah Palin’s timing and strategy should be in a required reading political text: “Palin on Politics – How to time it; how to move in the political and media morass.” When half the nation thought that she was unqualified to be Vice-President never mind President; when she was being sued in her home state for all manner of imagined infractions (ALL suits were dismissed) – she resigned as Governor of Alaska before the end of her elected term.

This move was internationally publicized and criticized and was followed by her disappearance from the political stage- an action  many thought was inadequately explained. Sarah had gone fishing literally and figuratively.  As a result, she was viewed in many categories from nuts to never-mind-she-knows-what-she’s-doing.

Then as the curiosity reached fever pitch – boom  – a book and a book tour that looked for all the world like the resurrection of a political campaign. She brought the books and the balloons; her well-organized effort brought out followers and converts – camping out all night for tickets and standing in long lines at every stop. It was electrifying and in the middle of it all  – a calm and gracious, more confident Sarah who showed her stuff on Oprah no less.

Facing down that outspoken supporter of Obama was among the most powerful strategic moves she had made to date.  AND the timing was perfect.  It came just before the start of the book tour. Say what you will about O, to be on her show has made careers. In this case, Sarah made O’s ratings soar that day.

Those of you who claim that Oprah brought Sarah Palin onto her show this week strictly for the ratings — during sweeps month, duh — well, the gambit worked. The Palin interview scored Oprah the highest ratings she’s had in two years [Blogs.SunTimes.com]

When O began to sound like the Spanish inquisition, she put herself out of Sarah’s circle of success.

Sarah went on to score a huge success with a wildly popular book tour complete with long lines and people sleeping outside bookstores across the nation to ensure they got in. And to cap this off, it was as gratifying to see seasoned reporter and viper Andrea Mitchell restrained by crowd handlers from getting near Sarah for an interview on one of her wildly popular book tour stops.

Last summer, as the Tea Party Express traversed the country, it was expected that Sarah would join it at some stop. But Sara has crafted a career of NOT doing the expected. The Tea Party Express [teapartyexpress.org] has been a very visible “chapter” but is run by several key individuals, Mark Williams, Vice Chairman of Our Country Deserves Better PAC has been a point man for the group. Caravans continue to be announced on their web site.

Then at the now famous march on Washington in September, the focus was again on Sarah Palin.  By this time she was being talked about as the leader the Tea Party Movement needed.  But would this have been a good move?  Certainly NOT for a future candidate.

Top Tea Party movers and shakers today clarified Sarah’s relationship with the Tea Party movement. In yet another well-timed exercise in political strategy, Sarah has agreed to be the keynote speaker at the first national convention of the Tea Party Movement. she will be joined by “rising star” Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachman who will also speak. The convention is scheduled for  February 4-6 in Nashville, Tennessee.  [ CNN.com]

Now, in a time of deep distress and uncertainty in our nation, Sarah Palin is a beacon of survival and of creative self-initiative. She is now the master-in-chief of her image and her message. She is now poised at the brink of, well, her next strategic, well-timed move.  The suspense builds; the speculation continues – Sarah, what a success you are and on YOUR terms!
