Huff Po: “Imagine” Sarah Palin/Teapartiers might “shoot to kill”

Posted on March 28, 2010

Last night and this AM,  local radio and television stations and the internet have been abuzz with stories of FBI and DHS raids in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio surrounding Miltia groups. Well, Holy hollerin’ Huff Po – take a look at a column that bloomed in the night headed:

Are Republican Right Wingers Homeland Security Threats?

Carolne Myss should be put behind bars for inciting progressives to “imagine.”   “Imagine” that Republicans and/or right wing Republicans are “dangerous.”  They could get out of control and hurt someone.  Their leadership is crazed and irresponsible.  But  you can’t call her on any of this because, well, it’s just a theory – right?

Here’s the bottom line, folks: The Republican right-wingers are dangerous. They should be considered homeland and homegrown security threats and we – those of us who live and vote on the other side of the aisle – are their targets. How do I know if one of these gun-toting hysterics won’t let loose and “shoot to kill”, following the orders of their leader, Sarah Palin? And, if Palin’s too busy because of her upcoming Reality television series, I can easily imagine Michele Bachmann or John Boehner giving a “shoot to kill” command to their Tea Party followers….

But she conveniently drops the “right wing” in front of “Republicans” one too many times for my taste.  And she quotes people like Michele Bachman without any reference to substantiate the quotes.

These Republicans have, in essence, raised a call to arms against their own countrymen and women during a time when this country continues to fight a war started by Republicans for bogus reasons, a fact which we must never forget. Representative Michele Bachman from Minnesota screamed to her constituents recently, “I want people in Minnesota armed and dangerous … Having a revolution every now and then is a good thing.”

Of course Caroline is not inciting anything – just asking you to “imagine” or is she? She didn’t imagine Michele Bachman in a situation- she quoted her. So she plays real loose with her imaginary verbal  camera.  And then, it is not a big stretch of her imagination to take us back to the blameworthy Bush administration to spread the fear:

(Remember those concentration camps the Bush/Cheney administration set up overseas for torture in Poland and a few other countries?) And can you even imagine what would happen to a liberal (or any astute American) who tossed out a comment to, oh, say, Rove, such as, “Hey, appreciate your shredding the Constitution. Good job, there. Only thing you did well.” Hum … My guess is that person would end up with a hood over his or her head and never be seen or heard from again.

What good guesswork – or was that inspired imagination?

Caroline, the real bottom line here is that we are in a tense time of social change. There are rumors enough, imaginings enough and fear enough that writing it up as gospel doesn’t help the situation.  Unless you are into yellow journalism, this is not professional journalism.  It is irresponsible to take fear mongering to the degree that you have taken it and call it “reporting” or even a credible essay.  As a in all periods of unrest down through history, there is lots of DISinformation around and an internet to spread it around at warp speed.

It is unclear who is tossing bricks, who is telling the truth about what happened or who did it – all of it needs investigation not instigation.  I would “imagine” a lot of people could hold you responsible if something dire were to happen to a right wing congressman/woman.

One thing is certain, the left and the right just don’t speak the same language – or speak in the same idiom anymore.  The separation is already here thanks to intolerance fueled by people like  you.  Michele Bachman may have been using terms figuratively that you use seriously and realistically.  Are you willing to die for your country defending your syntax?
