Stun Gun Politics and Stealth Mode PR – The Obama Administration Flies Under the Radar

I have never seen an administration that put so much “stuff” out there in such rapid fire succession– legislation, opinions, appointments – fears, and “spokespeople” to discuss it on radio and TV.  It’s as if they want to overwhelm all the media and info outlets thereby obscuring their true direction.  They confound the average cit who has little turnaround time for arm-chair detective work to research answers the media no longer ask: who, what, when, where and why. Even openness in journalism is dead.

Confusion is a brilliant control tactic – just do so much so fast that the poor victim is stunned.  I like to call this ” stun gun politics.” So far we have been unable to outflank the media wizards at 1600 PA Ave!  If this were the time of the Spanish Armada, the Administration would be manning those swift greyhounds of the sea that outran the cumbersome Spanish galleons.

Now the White House Communications machine is focused on the internet – now they have Obama traveling to another personal appearance (the ultimate weapon) – now one of the countless Czars is making a policy announcement.  And that prime picket in this media war – Rahm Emanuel – is the only one in the world who can keep an ear to the ground while darting around door to door on Capitol Hill.  Unannounced closed-door meetings and fast exits – all done to perfection.

Press releases fall like rain and press briefings proliferate.  No wonder so many members of the White House team are married to one another.  Efficiencies of communication in this group are critical.  If you can read another’s body language, all the better.  It constitutes a new level of PR – stealth mode.

Let’s examine ONE day in the life of the Administration – well as well as we can.  Let’s take Saturday – today – October 24.  Should be a slow news day, right?  Why no, not at all.  Just when we were all outside enjoying this break in the weather, President Obama maked an important announcement.  He declared a H1N1 emergency.  Why a weekend announcement?  Was their concern that we would all fight over masks and sanitary hand soap the pharmacy?

Concurrently, the FDA authorized “Emergency Use of Intravenous Antiviral Peramivir for 2009 H1N1 Influenza for Certain Patients, Settings.”  Looks like a whole lot of coordination went  on.

But what about Canada and Mexico?  What are they doing?  Don’t we do these kinds of big things in concert?  Doesn’t the virus come and go at will over the borders?

With the shadow of a pandemic grabbing the headlines, ever so quietly the Administration caved under pressure from the “Fringe Media” amd allowed FOX news to join in a pool interview of Treasury Department “pay czar” Kenneth Feinberg. New  York Daily News.

Operating under the radar over the weekend were continuing Health Care Reform negotiations.  As of late friday, the word was that

[h]ealth care legislation taking shape in the House would carry] a price tag of at least $1 trillion over a decade, significantly higher than the target President Barack Obama [had] set, congressional officials said Friday as they struggled to finish work on the measure for a vote early next month. [my way]

Of course we are all so worried about the pandemic that the changing cost figures for health care reform are of little consequence – today that is.

Meanwhile, who is talking Afghanistan?  I think we will have to wait to see if the war is scripted for the Sunday talk shows.
