It has been asserted that a National Restaurant Association Board Member may have leaked information about the Herman Cain Sexual Harassment Settlement. Let’s stop scanning the membership of the NRA to ascertain who would have had a motive to do in Cain. The information could also have been found in a fortune cookie. Lets focus on what can be done to handle this situation.
- The attorney for one of the two women who are alleged to have been parties to a settlement of sexual harassment charges against Herman Cain when he was CEO of NRA was on Anderson Cooper 360 on CNN this evening. He gave the bottom line statement about settlements. They do not infer that either party is guilty. That fact needs to be emphasized.
- Yes, it is important to know all about presidential candidates. Sexual harassment is a serious charge and needs to be addressed. So far, Cain has in fact addressed it. He has in various ways said the claim is baseless. It could easily have been the settlement of a nuisance claim. We are, however, headed to a he said/she said road block to Cain’s campaign that may kill it. Cain needs to get out in front of it and ask the Association to release all sides from the confidentiality agreement. It cannot drag on. Hopefully this “distraction” will end.
Again, who leaked the information and not getting out in front of this mushrooming story need to be handled and can be. To his credit Cain has handled himself in a reserved manner. And to charges his story has changed, the response could easily be he is thinking through an incident that happened 12 years ago and about a settlement in which he had no direct part.

Is it important? Well, I think to some degree it is. This campaign is going to be bloody – we’ve always known that, Obama has never run a clean campaign and he always plays as dirty as it can possibly get. He’s going to smear and sling mud at every opportunity. We expect that.
But to have such mud thrown from within our own party, well that’s a different story. Yes, each candidate is going for the brass ring, but we expect them to do it honestly and honorably and to get behind the eventual nominee. For me personally, and I suspect for many in the conservative side, finding out one of “our own” did such a thing would be grounds for eliminating from contention. I don’t think any of us wants a candidate who would do such a thing. That’s why it matters.
Yes, Cain needs to get in front of it. But knowing who is behind it is a valid and important question too.
My $.03. (factored for inflation.

The revelations that a Perry campaign staffer worked for the. NRA is revealing. I knew I could smell RINO dung, I just had the wrong RINO thinking it was Romney who has already disgraced himself with the manipulation of primary dates to disadvantage opponents. If the goal is to ensure that rivals within the party are properly vetted before the general election, then it should be done privately.
My prediction now is for a deadlocked convention. Others have suggested Christie or Bush could exploit that situation to become the nominee, but I know of another candidate who lives far to the North and West who would enjoy far more popular support within the party.

I love it when I can draw you out for an insightful comment. I hope the question in this post will draw out others. You make wonderfully stated and valid points per usual DF. You rock!

With the media, if they don’t like you, you should remember everything. If they do like you, you can’t expect a person a remember something that wasn’t important.
Will this hurt Herman Cain? If we let it it will! But I don’t think that it will happen, I think that things are so bad right now that something that happened so long ago, it there is no there there, is going to be forgotten pretty quick, no matter how much the media would like it otherwise!

I hope that the settlement of years ago stands as far as fault is concerned. The woman cannot expect public opinion to make a trial a possibility. The clock must surely have run out on that. But the powers who unleashed this want to slow him down and erode his independent base at the very least.

I confess that while Ive been leaning towards Cain since Palin declined to run, I find his handling of the charges disturbing. Being charged with sexual harassment is traumatic. It is an emotionally significant event that will not be forgotten. Also the Cain campaign got a heads up when reporters asked for comment on the story. Cain knew this issue was being raised. Yet he claimed he couldn’t remember. Now that one or perhaps both of the accusers may be stepping forward, this is going to get ugly. Cain will be to severely damaged to win the general election even if he secures the nomination.
If it was the DNC that outed Caine, that might not effect the choice of Republican voters.
However, if one of Cain’s Republican rivals outed him, then Republican voters need to know that. I still suspect Romney.
This incident should also inform decisions in regard to Gingrich who was cheating on his first wife while impeaching Clinton for perjury on sexual harassment. While I can cut John McCain some slack for going nuts after getting out of the Hanoi Hilton, Gingrich’s adultery was inexcusable. (yes, vie seen his former mistress that became his new wife. While one can’t fault Gingrich for bad taste, having a hot looking woman is no excuse.

Here is a hint.

Lowersmy opinion of Perry but also makes the allegations more serious.
Where is Sarah when we need her?

Every candidate for national office should know (and be prepared ahead of time) for everything in your past to possibly come under scrutiny. I just don’t think Cain’s campaign was prepared to address this skeleton and it took them off guard. It’s little wonder that so many good people refuse to run for public office. All of us have things in our past that we wish to remain hiddlen from the media spotlight. Since a settlement was reached, I doubt we will ever learn if the charges were baseless or not. All we can do is judge the character of the man today and weigh everything.
btw: Your new niece, Grace, is adorable!
