I looked around my leafy kingdom this afternoon and a feeling of loss overwhelmed me. In what seems a matter of minutes, it will all be gone and the bare bones of the trees will haunt me for the next 6 months. I have planted 6 trees this summer on my small property in an attempt to get back to the true green this part of the world used to be when Indians roamed the mossy paths around the Finger Lakes.
The seriousness of September is at the door. Kids go back to school and adults get back into true work gear. SamHenry will be back into the blog world more heavily and that is a passion. But to grow older is to realize there is a limit to the number of summers one has and the need to enjoy them is more intense. Being outside under the canopy of the sky is my greatest joy. There is a trapped feeling that I carry around all winter. Not even the occasional winter trip to a friend’s in Florida dispels it. Florida is fake.
The North East is real. When the plane door opens onto the winter Florida scene and the warm air and intense green hits you, you have flashbacks to Dorothy’s arrival in Oz. Technicolor! Fake! Florida!

Beautiful Sam Henry, very nice structure and bones to your garden. Mine is random with very little structure. I love trees and am sad to say that we lost at least one and maybe more this summer because of the severe drought. Lost a few rose bushes and other shrubs as well. Perhaps next year will be better. It has been much to hot here in Ar. to spend time out this summer with temps averaging over 100 degrees and reaching as high as 118. I am looking forward to much cooler temps and winter looks very appealing right now.

Thank you LL. I was busy yesterday moving a partially established tree. Wrong time of year but I was determined to get it to the right place ASAP. It looks not too bad for the experience. I will take more photos next summer when the leaves are on the trees I just planted – more river birches around the barn room. The woman who helps me once a week said: “I don’t know anyone who plants a forest in their back yard.”

I hear ya Sam !! … I’ve been lamenting the fact that September ‘s at the door .. And October and November run like the wind !! .. Then you’re up to your shins in snow and it seems to take forever to feel the warmth of the sun once again .. I’ve been in Canada here my entire 51 years .. AND I HATE WINTER !!! … Dark when ya get up .. Dark on your way out from work !! … Cold !!! … Bothersome !!! … Going to the corner store’s a fiasco !!! …
DEPRESSING INDEED !!! …

Oh, good my Morb. This misery needs company. I wish we would build more underground shopping as in Canada.

You would have hated where I grew up, Sam. No rain from perhaps March, to around Sept or Oct. Summer months were dry and everything turned brown. To see rain in summertime was a rare event, and to show you how rare and eventful, I recall only one, on 7-5-74.
Your yard is so pretty and so inviting! I want to just sit down for a while and breathe. I love all the ferns, too.
