Our silver-tongued President took to the air waves last night to remind us that he alone knows the truly responsible fiscal way and that he has given all he can reasonably give under the circumstances. Shot through with Republican arrows a la St. Sebastian, the President threw himself on the mercyof the court of public opinion with such slick phrases as:
“The American people may have voted for divided government, but they didn’t vote for a dysfunctional government,” Obama said. “So I’m asking you all to make your voice heard. If you want a balanced approach to reducing the deficit, let your member of Congress know.” [full speech is here]
Is this the same man who took over health care reform from a Democratic congress that could not get its act together?
The dysfunctional government assessment from Obama is the phrasing of someone who is making an appeal – a reasonable appeal – to his people. He knows his people. They don’t want a dysfunctional government. And he knows the government is now dysfunctional. The Republicans have brought this on. Alas and alack.
For the last decade, we have spent more money than we take in. In the year 2000, the government had a budget surplus. But instead of using it to pay off our debt, the money was spent on trillions of dollars in new tax cuts, while two wars and an expensive prescription drug program were simply added to our nation’s credit card.
Somewhere in all of that was 911 – an event that considerably changed America. Talk about glossing over. He then asked American to contact their representatives. Websites crashed in the process. But realize this: it does not mean that all of America was responding. It means a greater number than usual were checking in.
Boehner was his equal in oratorical cleverness:
“Unfortunately, the president would not take yes for an answer,” Boehner said. “Even when we thought we might be close on an agreement, the president’s demands changed.” [see full text of speech here]
Not only did his demands change, his entire agenda is moving toward the center as he prepares for 2012. He has been campaigning since the end of the last election season. He has to do well in these negotiations. He has to prove to the electorate he can lead – that he can successfully preside over a divided political entity, Congress.
Boehner then went on to outline substantial action that has and will occur in Congress devoid of the input from unelected White House flunkies in the myriad of meetings that have taken place to date:
Because there is no stalemate in Congress. The House has passed a bill to raise the debt limit with bipartisan support. And this week, while the Senate is struggling to pass a bill filled with phony accounting and Washington gimmicks, we will pass another bill – one that was developed with the support of the bipartisan leadership of the U.S. Senate.
I expect that bill can and will pass the Senate, and be sent to the President for his signature. If the President signs it, the ‘crisis’ atmosphere he has created will simply disappear. The debt limit will be raised. Spending will be cut by more than one trillion dollars, and a serious, bipartisan committee of the Congress will begin the hard but necessary work of dealing with the tough challenges our nation faces.
The individuals doing this work will not be outsiders, but elected representatives of the people, doing the job they were elected to do as outlined in the Constitution. Those decisions should be made based on how they will affect people who are struggling to get a job, not how they affect some politician’s chances of getting reelected.
Meanwhile Jerry Brown in California is living the Democratic vida loca signing away common sense and lots of dollars to chase votes out there. He has signed that state’s version of the Dream Act that will give aid to undocumented college students [see article here]. The beat goes on with or without Obama.

It more than boggles my mind that he STILL takes no responsibility for the mess we’re in, he STILL blames Bush, and he STILL will NOT compromise on HIS agenda! YET … he STILL has put no plan on the table of his own! This is leadership? umm, NOT! and now … sure let’s share the … wealth? foighxoidg;oeihg;ohgfhs;uhg*

Barb – we have such a dearth of leadership that we bloggers will have to get out from behind our computers and be prepared to run things. No one is running anything anymore. All Democrats do is run around behind the scenes drafting legislation while keeping Republicans busy with garbage. No one knows how to govern. We have not one great statesman. Everyone in office has been bought before the election has been run because no one can afford to run for anything without either being a millionaire or having been bought by a few. It is not a pretty sight. One question though. How is it there are so many millionaires in a communist country like China?

Love how BO phrased his message last night SH. Silver tongue? You bet!! This guy is a really slick propagandist. He used the term “divided government” instead of what most other POTUS have used, meaning, two party system. And in his statement above you quote he connected our two party system, “divided government” with “dysfunctional government.” That was pretty slick my dear
He’s planted the seed now and watered it and that seed says the US system of Representative and elected government simply does not work. What seed does he plant next? The solution seed, which will be, creation of a Marxist government, one party system. Just hide and watch
I can’t help but notice my dear SH that BO loves to gloss over 9/11 as if it was not any event of any significance. After being in office for almost 3 years he finally visited Ground Zero this year. Shouldn’t he have done that long before? And what about Major Nidal Hassan the US Army Muslim Major who is a radical Muslim terrorist? The government is dragging its feet on prosecuting him and messing up on the evidence. On purpose? It is clear where BO’s love lies, no?
Last night I was not impressed by BO or by Cry Baby Boehner. In fact I was fully disgusted by both of these poor excuses for men and even poorer excuses for leaders. BO went to the court of public opinion last night because he’s out of options I think. He has no clue where to go from here. This man is not a leader, statesman, or visionary in any sense of the terms. He’s an amateur who has really never accomplished anything. His entire life he’s been handed everything on a silver platter for nothing. No one has ever told him NO! We are thusly dealing with a spoiled rotten boy in an adult man’s body like so many other males in America today. Not good IMO. There’s something wrong with our nation and society and it goes beyond politics and the economy. Until it is corrected we will continue on this same old road towards destruction that I suspect we are on today.
BTW good post

My dear Lorinov, I was just thinking about this blog at dinner and how I should have got into the impact of his use of the word “dysfunctional” to describe our government. That is not a good advertisement for our system and it will not garner investors in our bonds. Then I got home from dinner out and lo, here were your comments that did just what I had envisioned. Thank you. I am not impressed with Boehner as well. And there is not any presidential candidate in the running now that can save us either. I said it weeks ago: It does not matter if we avoid default, the damage has been done. We have waxed dysfunctional a tad too long. We have acted out the fact that this is not a very efficient system when people like Obama are in control. So good to bat ideas around with you.

Interesting SH
I scanned over an article today where some big wig in China’s Communist land said all of the debt drama is making the democratic system look like a system of fools and making the US look like a fool. Sadly I must agree with this Communist and I seldom agree with anything they say. All of the sensationalism and drama coming from BO and Boehner are making us and our system look like foolish fools in the eyes of the world. Just one more peg BO is using to take America down. Let us not forget this is the same man who sat in Rev Wright’s Racist Anti-American “church” for 23 years and never batted eye nor raised voice in protest. The mere fact that he and his wife sat in that church for so long listening to that crap is proof enough for me that BO is anti-America and anti-democracy. Otherwise he would have left Wright long before 2008 elections.

Excellent points. But as for the Chinese, isn’t there a little bit of incongruous “living” going on there with millionaires and then the great body of the people?
Did you see where Putin wants to return to the Kremlin? Is the world nuts or not?
I have lived too long. I have lived to see my country and my bank account destroyed and myself carrying around poundage from years of worrying about my bottom line (financial of course) and now I have to worry about the Fed’s bottom line too? I will just go sit under a tree this weekend and eat chocolate. Nothing more to do. I am fresh out of bright ideas.

SH that’s the typical way Marxists operate. It’s do as I say, not as I do. The same was true in Soviet Union. The elite powerful lived like Tsars while the common people often starved and etched out a minimal living. Oh yes, Communism is good for you but not for me, was the unspoken message. Look closely and you will see this same thinking over and over again in both Barack and Michelle Obama
Yes, yes, Tsar Putin LOL. Who does he think he’s fooling. He is dictator just like old Soviet leaders. Elections? Ha! Even in Russia today they are rigged. Putin will take any office he wishes and it does not matter if he is PM or Pres or Secretary or street sweeper. Everyone knows well who holds the power in Russia today and it is Vladimir Putin. And Medvedev? He’s just the monkey on the Putin string
Not to worry my dear SH. Am planning to go to South America and take over some regime there. Paraguay is looking good right now, no? Once I declare new Little America you can come there and will be just like living in old America before the Marxist Corporatists secretly overthrew our government and sunk us into massive debt never to be repaid. I will give you the Bush family ranch there. I hear they have a big one now.

Brown is insane, that’s all there is to it. CA has no money for that, nor should illegals receive the benefits that the taxpayers pay for. It’s just wrong. I lived in CA when he was Gov before, and I just can’t get over that they elected him again! Talk about betting $10B on the instant replay!
As for O, I have no words for him. He’s just a liar. Perhaps a good one, but really, that’s not something to be proud of.

Falcon look at BO’s life closely and you will see pattern of consistent sociopathic behavior. Lying is a great part of their behavior. So, logically, BO is a sociopath among other things in my book.
As for Brown I was astounded to see CA put him back in power. Do the people in CA love being abused and ripped off or what? Do they get some sort of mileage out of it? CA is already bankrupt and Brown is not going to solve that problem but make it worse.

Oh I absolutely agree with you Rob! We here in IL knew about O long before he ran for president.
I have no clue why people vote for people like O and Brown. Love being abused? Maybe that’s what it is, you might be on to something there!

Long have I thought Americans have a collective death wish and long have I hoped I was wrong. Time will tell but the way it looks now is that I’ve been right all along, sadly.
