More than controversial and always exceeding expectations in dire threats he issues, Nation of Islam leader Louis Farakkhan warns Americans that what is happening in Egypt, Tunisia and other North African countries will be coming to your door.
Just to give his warnings the look and feel of a coming reality, Farakkhan has asked President Obama not to attack protesters when they do take to the streets. Is he kidding? Obama is a friend of Islam and would never do that. He would view it as a teachable moment and lecture on it himself.
SamHenry was a student at college in the early 1960s. Browsing in the bookstore one afternoon, there it was: C. Eric Lincoln’s seminal book, The Black Muslims in America the title for the Nation of Islam then. It was an eye opener to what was going on in some (mostly urban) black communities across America. The organization has also figured prominently in the lives of two of its mores famous leaders: Malcolm X and Louis Farrakhan. The Nation of Islam Website and its history of the movement may be found here.

I never thought much of Farrakhan or his “Nation” of Islam. These people have discredited the Islamic religion and modified it beyond the teachings of Islam. I checked their web site, thanks for the link, and was struck by the image of Farrakhan. I am not against dressing up or looking prim and proper for anyone in such a role. However, Islam is about modesty and not flamboyance. He [Farrakhan] reminds me of those evangelist preachers who appeared on TV with their 10-ton-of make-up pasted on their wives faces, and used religion to cheat people out of and collect millions of dollars… and building $100,000 homes for their dogs! You may have seen the 60-Minute or some like-show where those morons were exposed.
Nevertheless, their call for another country or land to call their own is, in my opinion, bizarre (their web site). Do they want to be the next Zionists and steal someone’s land somewhere?
If this is their belief, then why does Farrakhan even care what Americans would or wouldn’t do?
Most disturbing though, is belief number 12 (from their web site):
What a bunch of garbage. Islam, like Judaism, does not have such beliefs and/or that God appears in the person of anyone. And of all places, here, in America? Puh-leeeeez!
These people are lost. This is why Malcolm X broke away from this garbage. He learned that Islam was not Farrakhan’s or Elijah’s or whoever.., he learned that the white man was not the devil and that everything he learned based on belief # 12 was simply garbage.

Thank you for your fine and informative comment ATW. I as well realize that this is not the true Islam. This is their version of Islam and I love the comparison with the televangelists. I hope you are more than impressed that I bought that book when I was in college. You can imagine how shocking a read it was in those days. And thank you for explaining what happened to MalcolmX. Some think that the followers of Farakkahan killed him.

Thanks Sami – thanks very much. I had a young German student visit me yesterday who said he felt for me to predict demonstrations in this country (mainly based on food shortages) was an overreaction. Well, if people are out of work and don’t have jobs, then they will not be able to buy much food. A crowd ripe for a person like Farrakhan to preach hatred.
