US Expands Special Ops Search for Terrorists to Africa, Iran and Other Countries

Many agree the best way to fight al Qaeda’s expanding global network is to utilize special operations forces to seek them out and to disrupt their networks as they set them up.  The US has been behind in on-the-ground intelligence throughout much of its involvement in the Middle East and surrounding region.

Officials said that many top commanders, General Petraeus among them, have advocated an expansive interpretation of the military’s role around the world, arguing that troops need to operate beyond Iraq and Afghanistan to better fight militant groups. [NYTimes]

While many of us are relieved that our military is now diminishing the role of the use of large amounts of troops, yet two things need to be remembered.

  • We cannot allow any one of these expeditions to develop into a major conflict.
  • We must also remember that al Qaeda depends on recruits around the world to expand their operations even more efficiently.

There is then, only one major question:  will we be able to continue this policy with seemingly fewer personnel than al Qaeda?
