When I read today that Puerto Ricans do not want their Commonwealth to become the 51st state I scanned some of the reasons why they don’t want this to happen. Topping the list? They don’t want to pay federal taxes. Since it has been made clear to us post health care reform law that the cost of health care will continue to go up and that our taxes will surely go up to pay for this and the national deficit, I applaud their intelligence.
I had slowly begun to identify with the Puerto Ricans. Then it hit me. Why don’t I move to the Commonwealth, enjoy the benefits of being closely tied to this country, enjoy good weather and dump all of the taxes? But a move is costly.
I’ve got it. I’ll renounce my citizenship and just remain here as an illegal! I won’t get stopped because, well, I look like the WASP that I am – I think but I’m not sure. When I was in Italy, I was stopped by an American and asked directions in Italian. In France, I was grabbed and romanced by a Frenchman in the park on Bastille Day. Then in Spain, the same things happened. I could be anything European really. And when I travel to China with my Italian and Spanish friends, the Chinese won’t point to us and say to each other “look – there goes an Italian, a Spanish citizen and a British subject. No they will just say – hey look at those three ugly Europeans!
President Obama needs to cut to the chase – literally. Let’s not wait another day to have the Arizona law overturned. It was passed because the federal government is not doing its job to enforce immigration laws already on the books. Let’s just forget about what Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano has said about having sufficient coverage there (she got caught with a terrorist’s pants down last year – not good coverage there) and send more boots down to the region. State and Local Law enforcement are not equipped to handle immigration matters of this scope. Obama knows this. If he doesn’t do this, things will get even more chaotic and dangerous for both the illegals and the lawmen tracking them. He knows what orders his executive office allows him to issue.
Local lawmen will never figure out who is and who is not an illegal past a border check. Even at the border, they will not have had proper training TO CARRY OUT A FEDERAL FUNCTION. Say I had moved to Mexico as an ex-patriot but decided to return to the US to visit family. While I was away, I fell in with a group of Yemeni travelers looking for people who look European to carry out a terrorist mission! They said I was perfect for the job. Do you think that the lawmen have figured out this angle yet? I have and I’m not in law enforcement. I would even taunt them by disappearing into a local Chipolte’s for a burrito “fix.” The lawmen would disregard me at their peril.
Now if a member of the US Congress were to travel to Mexico for a couple of weeks, do you think he/she could reenter the US? It’s questionable. Congress is so alien to us these days that the lawmen may think of this angle: a Congressman who has been in Mexico has been killed and a Mexican who has had plastic surgery to look like him returns to the US to carry out a terrorist plot. So much exotic stuff has gone down lately that this is no longer the stuff of movies. We are so disoriented by current events that we are all reading our horoscopes and praying to every god we have ever heard of.
Face it, everyone is using their imaginations overtime these days trying to picture what an illegal immigrant looks like. Look in the mirror. What do you see? A possible target? Sure. And who put you in this position? Not the Arizona law. Not local law enforcement. No the federal government for not enforcing the law on which it is based.
Now President Obama, you look in the mirror. What do you see? Right, a man with papers that have been questioned and who therefore may have personal reasons for not shoring up immigration enforcement at the southern border.

Bless you, Arlene. I have reinserted the text. I cut it because it seemed to be too long and perhaps a bit far fetched. Thanks for the vote of confidence. We are headed for a very steep climb up one side of this roller coaster and a fast steep ride down the other side. It will be an interesting summer in the western world with so many people out of work and scared.
