Immigration Reform Suffers from Focus on Mexico and Unskilled Work

Posted on April 22, 2010

Mexico has spoken this week.  The proposed Arizona immigration law waiting to be signed will create bad feeling and bad enforcement (i.e. racial profiling). [Finance - Yah00]

Mexico is a way station for immigrants from Central and South America bound for the US.  They also are harboring immigrants from Asia and other countries as well.  This is pressure that causes Mexico to push for liberal immigration reform in the US.

Our farmers and the food industry desperately need cheap labor. Selected segments of the service industry also need a constant new supply of cheap labor.

The question is this:  should our immigration laws be constituted on the needs of Central and South American Nationals?  Should certain segments of the economy benefit from immigration laws over another?  Do we, in effect, have a “double standard” when it comes to immigration? OR are we lowering the bar too low?

These questions can only rise to the surface if we remove the emotional issues of job loss to natives due to immigration and other deflecting issues from the mix.

Canada has traditionally been a way station for immigrants from Asia and Europe waiting to get into the US.  Why are they waiting?  If they are uncovered here as illegals, will they receive amnesty and a road to citizenship?

Mexico has some of the toughest immigration laws on the books. There are many sources for an overview of them but the actual laws will need study [Mexonline].  Yet, we are supposed to act as a sponge to absorb excess population (native and immigrant) from Mexico?  There is no amnesty for undocumented immigrants in Mexico.  There is only deportation.  To get papers, you must prove that you will not be a burden to the economy.  [Human Events]  This is similar to Canadian requirements.

Ah, Democrats in the US would like to provide a road to citizenship to illegals and to let them enjoy a few of the benefits here such as health care.

But don’t cry out against what the Democrats are trying to legislate because Mexico and Democrats will call you racist.  Basically, if you are a member of  the European American and middle class, you are born racist and worse, a Republican.  It is expected that you will get worse with age and, at the very least,  join the Tea Party movement.

So let’s be very clear here:  Immigration reform will benefit Central and South Americans and firms in need of unskilled workers.  This is our focus.  Class dismissed.
