We began to hear the familiar spirited tones of conviction out of our Secretary of State on her recent trip to the Middle East. Hillary Clinton was firm and fearless in facing down Iran with stern warnings during visits to allies in the region. For the first time, she was representing an administration whose policies of pressure now more closely resemble her own. In 2008, she campaigned vigorously in support of taking a hard-line with Iran. Now, a year out from Obama’s inauguration, he seems to have seen the light and has approved tougher action – stricter sanctions directed at the revolutionary guard threatening a military dictatorship.
White House officials have begun what they say will be a “systematic” effort to target holdings of the Revolutionary Guards, which in addition to its nuclear involvement, also has a record of supporting militant Islamist organizations and cracking down on protesters.
While she will be closely followed in her diplomatic rounds by General Petraeus and the Head of the Joint Chiefs, she declared that the US was not planning an attack. [New York Times]
Now days after her homecoming, she has grabbed headlines again – this time by taking Alan Greenspan to task for the financial debacle we now face. She has made it clear that his policies have led to our current deficit level – a level that pose a risk to national security.
Appearing before Congress to defend the State Department’s $52.8 billion budget request for 2011, Clinton said the country’s massive foreign debt had sapped U.S. strength around the world.
It breaks my heart that 10 years ago we had a balanced budget, that we were on the way of paying down the debt of the United States of America, Clinton said. I served on the budget committee in the Senate, and I remember, as vividly as if it were yesterday, when we had a hearing in which Alan Greenspan came and justified increasing spending and cutting taxes, saying that we didn’t really need to pay down the debt — outrageous in my view. [Washington Post]
Welcome back, Hillary. It’s good to see some leadership in an Administration prone to dithering. You are the canary in the mineshaft for those looking for solid evidence of failed Obama policies. Whenever you speak up, it’s a sure thing he’s headed down.

Hillary Clinton is the Secretary of State? For how long???
SH, do you ever remember a SOS that’s been such a total non-player? I wish she was more involved in this admin.
They must have her locked up in a closet somewhere in the White House to keep her out of B-HO’s business.

MR – I think now she is and will be until she leaves – probably at the end of O’s first and only term. I think she is concerned about this country and that she will tough it out.
I think that NOW after a year in office thinking he is the only one who knows just what to do, he has learned his lesson – particularly in the Middle East. He so wanted to be friends and he was so wrong that he could be with anyone in that hot spot on the globe. Ditto South America.
I’m so glad to hear her speaking up. I feel better already.

I disagree with Hillary’s progressive domestic policies, although it sounds like she has found a strong voice concerning our avowed enemies overseas.
With Obamas displayed arrogance, it will be interesting to see to what degree she is willing to stand up to him.
No doubt she has the spine, and an intelligent ally in her husband, who, if you remember, called Obama “a Chicago thug” during the campaign.
The thug aspect of Obamas’ personality is becoming more and more obvious, especially after the health care summit.
