The Plastic Presidency

Posted on January 27, 2010

We are now in the midst of a Plastic Presidency. Don’t like what  you see?  No matter, we can melt and mold it or just call YOU wrong and/or crazy.

This president carries a Chines Express Card with a variable interest rate that has caused us to be in debt so deep that the St. Andreas fault seems like a hairline fracture. It is said that the State of the Union utterance will address the deficit in some way.  It has been suggested that paying down the national debt with unused tarp funds may be proposed.  Ah, but if  you don’t like that, wait a moment and this plastic policy can be melted and recast.

The  February first issue of Newsweek featured several articles that functioned as apologia for Obama and his Administration.  Where to begin? Why begin with the personality of the man himself, “Alone in a Crowd: Why Obama’s Cool Comes off as Cold.”

Now let’s get real here.  It was Obama’s manner – his personality during campaign 2008 – that swept him to power.  He was inspiring – and independents and Republicans were caught up in his powerful oratory as well as in the net cast by Organizing for Obama, a group that he helped create.  So why this piece about a man apart?  A man misunderstood?  About a man who seems cold and aloof but who really is just analytical by nature?  Is this a joke?  No, just a melting and reshaping of Obama’s plastic mask.  Is your sympathy meter registering 90 yet?  Is your guilt for being hard on the guy causing  you to feel weak?  Next we will hear he has checked into a clinic for personality disorder.

OK now that we know his nature, it’s easy to see why he has done some of what he has done vis-a-vis his policies. In the article “The Trouble with Barack” we learn that all the anger at the man over health care and other matters really has to do with a man who leads with his head rather than his heart.  Isn’t that what any good leader does in times of great challenge?  You surely wouldn’t want a sap coming on the news saying he’s really sorry that things haven’t worked out better in Afghanistan or with the economy.  What you would expect would be a man who could make up his mind in a reasonable period of time and then lead us in a definite direction.

Then there is the the fact that “Obama sometimes seems to be running the Brookings Institution not the Country.”  That’s how I felt after hearing the great Administration production on TV following the Detroit bomber’s security breach.  There was our CEO handing down assignments with time lines to his department heads.  It was studied and brief.  But about those time lines…has anyone checked a watch lately? Heads didn’t immediately roll. At last, a Obama that actually was willing to wait for all the facts in the case to be in before he made a decision. He has improved from the President who was confident that the Cambridge Police had acted “stupidly.”

The problem with the above two articles is that they put the citizenry and their ability to assess situations on trial.  Here is a President who has governed from the center since his first day in office.  It is our problem that we did not see this.

In short,  every point we the people have made in negatively assessing Barack Obama has been considered here.  Never have articles between a single cover of a national news magazine been so orchestrated to readjust our glasses.  You see, it’s our fault – not Barack’s.  He’s just a poor guy trying to do his job.  We are just unable to see him for who and what he really is. We just sit home imaging all manner of things political

But sadly, neither Barack nor Newsweek really knows and/or understands the electorate. We are very real, quite adult and reasonably intelligent -  and we give most people second and third chances. We don’t need many teachable moments.   We don’t need to hear “let me be clear” preceding the summary of his previous remarks. And we don’t need to hear “sorry, I’ve been out of touch.”  A working president – one truly doing his job doesn’t have time to make reassuring public service announcements.

Barack Obama has made himself perfectly clear. We very well know who and what he is – a Plastic, Progressive President.  It’s chilling to think the press could try to convince us otherwise casting Obama as the victim; the American public as the perpetrator.  One thing is “perfectly clear”: Newsweek for February 1 is an instrument of blatant propaganda.
