Picture this: An entire nation listening at the keyhole of the oval office. But wait – it may be the wrong keyhole. Should we be up on Capitol Hill listening outside the door behind which White House Presidential aide-de-camp and director of all things (possibly even the President), Rahm Emanuel, and selected Congressional reps are deciding our future?
Unhappily for Rahm, he and key legislators still have to deal with the inconvenience of working with and around a chronically indecisive leader and a chronically ineffective Vice-President. Oh, and then there are those bothersome voters.
Albeit with some concessions, Democrat-created and inspired legislation will pass. Pelosi whines; Obama signs. But the day will surely come when the legislative process will have been eliminated altogether. Government will have convinced us that even more economies can be realized through this move – additional dollars needed to support Medicare/Medicaid that will be sinking under the weight of funding health care reform’s public option.
Thanks to these kinds of “behind the door” secret gatherings, the legislative process has become the best new reality show in America. Fox News and John and Kate plus 8 have both been marginalized – even kicked under the bus – sacrificed to the new media icons – Rahm Emanuel and Anita Dunn. Nancy Pelosi is out of refreshing makeovers and can no longer elicit sustained interest.
Regardless of who’s on first, up there on the Hill there is everything needed to maintain media coverage and our interest: sex, infidelity, hollywood stars and lobbying big bucks everywhere you go. The ghosts of Administrations and legislators past wander the corridors since Obama will not release them from their blame chains.
If the President truly wants direct feedback from us he can simply open his office door thereby knocking down millions of us who have been listening at that key hole. The fact that we have had to use these kinds of tactics to discover what our government is doing is instructive.
What’s the punishment under the law for listening at keyholes? Well it isn’t exactly on a par with murder although we don’t know what secretive measures may have been formulated in the night to care for this kind of thing.
Meanwhile, the only Administration sanctioned murders continue in Iraq and Afghanistan due to underfunded, under equipped and under-supported American troops. Obama’s hand-picked General has, months ago, reported the recommended measures to win in Afghanistan. But Obama has to weigh all options except how the public will perceive him. After all, just last week Anita Dunn proudly described pre and post election PR that bypasses the press .
And so the drama continues under the watchful eyes and direction of Rahm and Anita – power and press manipulators extraordinaire. As our democratic form of government slips away and assumes soap opera status, We the People are now only members of the the supporting cast, illegal immigrants are extras. Emboldened by this state of affairs, more of the people who are really running this country will want to come out of their as yet undiscovered offices – offices with keyholes we’d like to know about.
